Search coursesAlthough school swimming is a compulsory part of the national curriculum, 35% of children leave primary school unable to swim 25 metres unaided. For some children, if they don’t learn to swim at school, they will never learn this important lifesaving skill.
There are three sets of training available, the first is a free resource, the second is for qualified swimming teachers and the third is for those working in a school environment:
To help schools comply with national curriculum requirements, we have developed a free interactive resource with Swim England. This resource gives an introduction to School Swimming and Water Safety, including guidance on training, standards and a summary of the core aquatic and safe self-rescue skills that all pupils should achieve.

Our ‘Teaching School Swimming and Water Safety’ course has been developed for Level 2 swimming teachers who want to deliver school swimming lessons and is available as either an online course or face to face seminar. It gives swimming teachers an understanding of what primary schools are required to teach and report on, knowledge of swimming in the national curriculum and where it sits in relation to physical education. It covers how to engage pupils and use swimming and water safety activities to support other areas of the curriculum.
The Swim England National Curriculum Training Programme (NCTP) has been developed for class teachers, support staff and other adults who have established relationships with pupils. It gives them the skills and knowledge needed to support the delivery of high-quality school swimming lessons, helping schools meet curriculum requirements.
