Celebrating 150 Years as the national governing body for swimming

Swim England News

This year we are celebrating 150 years as the national governing body for swimming in England.

Formed in 1869 by the coming together of London swimming clubs, the organisation quickly grew into a national body. Following a number of name changes, a reformation of the constitution and laws in 1886 created The Amateur Swimming Association.

Despite further re-brands – most recently in 2017 when we became Swim England – the organisation has remained focused on supporting its members to develop their skills, and creating opportunities for everyone to enjoy swimming, diving, water polo, open water, para-swimming and synchronised swimming.

Celebration, Education, Legacy

During 2019 we will be marking the 150th anniversary by celebrating our sports, clubs and members.

We will also be showcasing the vast range of activities we do to support everyone involved in the teaching and delivery of swimming.

A new digital library will also be launched which will provide free access to historical competitive data and wider information about the history of swimming and aquatic sports.
