Eden Cheng wins European Junior gold in Bergen
July 1, 2017Eden Cheng won Great Britain’s first gold of the European Junior Diving Championships 2017 with victory in the Group B Platform.
The Crystal Palace diver is making her European Junior debut at the event in Bergen, Norway.
But the 14-year old looked a star in the making as she swept to gold, finishing 20 points clear of the field on 361.30.
The English diver’s victory continues a remarkable rise to the top for Cheng, who was competing at the ASA National Age Group Championships 12 months ago.
After two golds in Sheffield, Cheng competed at her first British Junior Elite Championships this season, winning the Group B Platform crown.
And she has taken the step up to her maiden European Junior Champs in her stride, claiming the title that Plymouth’s Victoria Vincent won last year and Rio 2016 Olympian Lois Toulson lifted in 2014.
Louise Bradley also makes Platform final in Norway
Cheng’s Crystal Palace teammate Louise Bradley also made the Group B Platform final in Norway.
Having won 1m Springboard bronze earlier in the competition, Bradley scored 288.00 to finish 11th.
Cheng’s gold came 24 hours after four English divers secured top 10 finishes in the oldest Group A age group.
Sheffield Diving’s Millie Haffety (364.65) and Yasmin Harper (364.45) finished fifth and sixth respectively in the 1m Springboard.
City of Leeds’ Anthony Harding was sixth in the 3m, scoring 499.85, while teammate William Hallam scored 480.20 to place ninth.
Hallam and Harding returned for the 3m Synchro, scoring 294.90 to finish fifth.
Meanwhile, Southend Diving’s Tyler Humphreys was 14th in the Group B 3m Springboard, scoring 361.55 after the prelim.
