Tom Daley wins gold on return to action at British National Diving Cup

Tom Daley marked his return to competitive diving after a year away from the sport with a gold medal on day two of the British National Diving Cup.

The former world champion and Olympic bronze medallist teamed up with new partner Matty Lee and the duo were comfortable winners in the Men’s 10m Synchro at the Plymouth Life Centre.

They scored an impressive 421.41 to take top spot by 58.38 points from Ben Cutmore and Lucas Thomson (363.03), with Noah Williams and Kyle Kothari third (329.61).

Daley, who was competing back in his home city for the first time since 2017, said: “We’re really happy with that – 421 [points] for our first competition together is pretty solid.

“Our first two required dives were very good and the kind of scores we need to be challenging the Chinese and the Russians.”

Lee added: “The National Cup is probably one of the most nerve-wracking comps we do all year, because it’s in Britain, your family are watching, and diving next to Tom is obviously nerve-wracking as he’s a world champion and Olympic bronze medallist.

“It was really good start and we’ve got a lot to look forward to in the future.”

Daley and Lee will be in action on day three of the competition in the Men’s 10m Platform final.

Second gold for Goodfellow

Dan Goodfellow won his second gold medal of the event as he topped the podium in the Men’s 3m Springboard.

Having won the synchro title alongside Jack Laugher, Goodfellow finished on 446.10 two beat his City of Leeds Diving Club team-mate Anthony Harding (433.85) by 12.25 points.

Goodfellow said: “I’m really happy.

“This morning was a bit shaky and I’ve had a bit of inconsistency on my hurdles, but I knew before this weekend that I’d done everything I needed to do so that I was physically and mentally ready, so it was just a few minor things I had to sort out before the final.

“I felt really good and probably the strongest I ever have.

It wasn’t just two people fighting for that title – there are so many good divers now and we’re all doing the big dives, all the 3 1/2s and the front 4 ½ as well, so you just can’t hold back.

“We saw some top boys not even make the final, which is brutal and it may not happen in other events.”

The bronze medal was won by City of Sheffield’s Ross Haslam, who ended on 388.70.

Laugher, who finished top in the qualifying round, led after the opening two rounds of the contest but slipped away and ended up in fifth place.

Reid and Torrance live up to favourites tag

In the Women’s 3m Synchro, favourites Grace Reid and Kat Torrance didn’t disappoint as they took the title.

The duo finished on 285.06 to finished ahead of Maria Papworth Burrel and Scarlett Mew Jensen (271.26) and Yasmin Harper and Victoria Vincent (243.78).

Reid said: “We’re really pleased with that.

“We were very consistent, but there are obviously little things we want to improve, but considering that’s our first outing of this year we’re really pleased. We seem to have tried every dive list under the sun but I think we’ve found one that we feel really comfortable with and I think that’s starting shine through.

“I think the more we practice that set of dives the better we’ll get.”

McArthur edges out Toulson in thrilling contest

The Women’s 10m Platform was an incredibly close contest with Edinburgh Diving Club’s Gemma McArthur won gold by the narrowest of margins.

She finished on 327.75 to triumph by 0.35 points from Women’s 10m Synchro winner Lois Toulson (327.40).

Plymouth Diving’s Shanice Lobb was the bronze medallist with a score of 287.30.
