Great Britain win almost 100 medals at Masters World Championships in Japan
August 17, 2023A successful 2023 World Masters Championships for Great Britain saw almost 100 medals won across the aquatic disciplines at Kyushu 2023.
Ten days of aquatics action across the three Japanese cities of Fukuoka, Kumamoto and Kagoshima culminated last week with British medals being won in the pool, from the diving boards and in open water.
There was a number of standout British performances, which included a new world record from Eastbourne’s David Cumming in the 85-89 Years Men’s 200m Butterfly.
Cumming’s time of a 4:14.19 saw him claim one of his three golds after also winning gold in a Championship record time in the 50m Butterfly race.
It was one of many Championship records broken with Mike Hodgson setting a 26.86 in the 55-59 Years Men’s 50m Butterfly just moments later.
His Woking teammate Michelle Ware set a new Championship best to win gold in the 50-54 Years Women’s 50m Backstroke whilst Amanda Heath (Spencer Swim Team) set the new fastest 65-69 Years Women’s 200m Breaststroke event time in a British one-two ahead of club mate Esther Iseppi.
Dawn Kissack and Helen Gorman also set new Championship records in a strong meet for British swimmers.
On the diving boards, Southend Diving’s Jenni Cluskey came home with a hat-trick of golds whilst Jim McNally (Highgate) added two golds and a silver of his own.
There was also six medals in the 3km Open Water races whilst four of our artistic swimmers came away with top ten finishes in Solo competition.
Below is our medal roll of honour featuring all the British medallists throughout the competition in Japan.
"We play hard, we party hard and we certainly dive hard!" 😃
The Masters came to an end today in the island of Kyushu!
Time to listen from the experience of Jenni Cluskey, one of the divers with most participations at the Masters Champs! #Masterspic.twitter.com/gFU4zVUMjz— World Aquatics (@WorldAquatics) August 11, 2023
