WHAT WE’RE CAMPAIGNING FOR
Future of Our Pools
Since 2010, the nation has lost 450 swimming pools, with poorer areas losing the most.
Many of our pools are under threat due to shrinking council budgets, rising costs and ageing pools.
With your help, alongside our partners we have successfully campaigned for the £100 million National Leisure Recovery Fund and £63 million Swimming Pool Support Fund to help our pools.
But we know that there is more work to be done and we are campaigning for a network of sustainable pools that can support all aquatic activity.
We need a shared vision for the purpose of our pools and closer alignment between health and leisure services so that our pools can play their full role in supporting the health and success of the nation.
Access to Cleaner Water
We continue to campaign as part of the EndSewagePollution coalition to improve the health of our rivers, seas and lakes.
The coalition helped to raise the profile of water quality issues and secure improvements to the Environment Act 2022.
Alongside Surfers Against Sewage we have published a plan for sewage free waters.
We are also campaigning for greater access to outdoor swimming opportunities, including through the creation of 200 more designated bathing waters.
We are part of the Outdoors For All Coalition seeking new access legislation to improve access to outdoor swimming opportunities across the country. Read more about the campaign here.
Improving School Swimming
We believe every child should have the opportunity to be able to swim and be safe in, on and around the water. But sadly for too many children that is not the case – especially those from ethnically diverse communities.
As well as providing free resources to schools to help them deliver school swimming and water safety sessions we have been campaigning for better data around attainment levels so that support can be targeted most effectively at those schools who need it most.
The recent update to the School Sport and Activity Action Plan by the Department for Education contained huge progress in this area and within two years schools will be providing this information, enabling support to go where it is needed the most.
