100m Back Trophies
January 1, 2019There are four 100m Back trophies, awarded to the fastest senior and junior (U16) swimmers in the 100m Backstroke at the Swim England National Championships.

The Henry Dixon Trophy is awarded to the fastest male senior swimmer in the 100m Backstroke at the National Winter Championships (25m).
While the Winter Championships are traditionally a short course event, they were held in the long course 50m pool in 2017.
Until 2015, the Henry Dixon Trophy was awarded to the fastest male senior swimmer in the 100m Back at the ASA National Championships (50m).

History of the Henry Dixon Trophy
Henry Dixon was president of the ASA in 1960.
He was batman (officer’s personal servant) to Lawrence of Arabia, who gave him an elephant’s tusk which he later had made into a gavel.
This gavel can be seen on display on the 4th Floor of SportPark, however, due to its delicacy, it is no longer used at ASA Council meetings.
Henry Dixon was also president of the ASA North East Region in 1928 and again in 1962.

History of the Jeans Trophy
Constance ‘Connie’ James was a member of Nottingham SC and won 4x100m Freestyle Relay silver medals at both the 1920 and the 1924 Olympic Games.
During the First World War she was instrumental, along with her sister, on putting on swimming galas and water polo matches to entertain the wounded troops, which often finished with tea at the school which was opposite the pool.

History of the S R Drinkwater & W H Dalby Trophy
Drinkwater and Dalby were the ASA Hon Auditors for many years, keeping ASA finances on the straight and narrow.
Mr Dalby became ASA President in 1954. He was also treasurer of the ASA Midland Region for 10 years, as well as being the secretary of Nottinghamshire Swimming Association and a timekeeper at the 1948 Olympic Games.
Mr Drinkwater followed in his father’s footsteps and became the ASA Midland Region President in 1952.
The Mrs A M Austin Memorial Trophy is awarded to the fastest female junior swimmer in the 100m Backstroke at the National Winter Championships (25m).
While the Winter Championships are traditionally a short course event, they were held in the long course 50m pool in 2017.
Alice Austin was the first female president of the ASA in 1952 and the first female president of the Southern Counties in 1926.
Until 2015, the trophy was awarded to the fastest female swimmer in the 100m Back at the ASA National Youth Championships (50m).
