European records fall as Trafford Metro and Suzanne Noble shine on day two
October 28, 2023The final session of day two at the GoCardless Swim England Masters National Championships started and finished with European records being broken.
Last year’s Otter 150 Cup winners, Trafford Metro, displayed their quality as they set a new European record in the opening event of the session.
Their team of Rachel Barton, Neville Barton, Judy Brown and Neil Mackinnon recorded a time of 5:47.93 in the 280+ Years Mixed 4x100m Medley Team.
That result saw them lower the previous record time, which stood at 5:54.71, by almost seven seconds.
Alongside the European record, there was also two new British records set in the Mixed 4x100m Medley Team.
The first was set by Derby Excel’s quartet of Ethan Lawton, Imogen Clark, Georgina Pryor and Liam Dawson in the 72+ Years age group. The team set an impressive time of 3:50.46.
Dartmoor were the next record-breaking team, a feat which seemed a regular occurrence on day two after the club continued its success, having already broken four relay records.
Number five was just around the corner as the team – made up of Lauren Quigley, Kieran Preston, Sonny Trigg and Dolly Trigg – broke the 100+ Years age group record by almost nine seconds after clocking in at 4:01.32.
Noble adds another European record to tally
East Anglian swimmer Suzanne Noble added another European record to her tally, after breaking the 1500m record on the opening day of the competition.
Noble showed great endurance yet again as she clinched victory, again in a new European record time, but this time in the 60-64 Years Female 800m Freestyle event.
The 61-year-old rounded day two off in style, with a clear margin between her and the remainder of her age group. She touched the wall in a time of 10:34.62.
In the Open/Male 800m Freestyle event, two further British records were smashed.
The first by Peter Dixon in the 55-59 Years age group with a time of 9:13.11, and the second by David Cumming in the 85-89 Years age group in 14:58.79.
British Breaststroke records
The 50m Breaststroke events saw four new records overall – one in the Female heats and three in the Open/Male heats.
Spencer’s Amanda Heath swam an incredible 200m Butterfly on day one which saw her set a new world record, but her success didn’t stop there as she broke the British record in the 65-69 Years Female 50m Breaststroke.
The 66-year-old narrowly improved on her own record after swimming a time of 40.11. Her previous best, set earlier this year, stood at 40.78.
In the Open/Male events, Richard Ayre was the first to claim a new British record after clinching the win.
The East Leeds swimmer put in a time of 28.43 in the 30-34 Years age group, just five one hundredths of a second faster than the previous record.
And Ben Harkin was eager to continue his strong form, having already set a British record in the 50m Backstroke.
With a fast time of 29.43, the 45-year-old Warrington swimmer was only three tenths of a second in front of the 45-49 Years age group previous record held by Michael Hodgson.
Many 50m swims are often a tale of fine margins, and it couldn’t have gotten any closer in the 60-64 Years age group.
David Bryant added to Woking’s winning ways so far in the competition with his new British record time of 32.43. There was just one hundredth of a second separating his time with the previous best of 32.44.
