Amanda Heath and Basingstoke 4x100m relay team on top of the world
October 27, 2023Two world records were broken in session two of the GoCardless Swim England Masters National Championships 2023.
Spencer’s Amanda Heath broke her own world record in the Female 100m breaststroke whilst Basingstoke’s 160+ Years team set the new world best time in the Female 4x100m relay.
66-year-old, Heath performed excellently at the Masters National Championship last year and this year’s she’s gotten even better in the 100m breaststroke.
The Spencer swimmer swam a phenomenal 1:27:95, beating her old time of 1:28:03.
the previous record holders GB Police had strong time of 4:09:88 however the team of Basingstoke made light work of it as they came in at 4:02:15 beating it by more than seven seconds.
The quartet of Sarah Hunt, Elizabeth Godfrey, Alex O’Kelly and Fleur Turner worked well as a unit and swam strongly on their way to victory.
Gateshead and Wichkham became the European record holders in the 240+ Years during the same relay event, bettering the record they set last year. The time to beat was 4:53:03 and they came in just before that swimming a 4:51:67.
Cumming sets three records in one race
85-year-old David Cumming set three records in one swim as he won gold in the 85-89 Years Open/Male 400m Individual Medley race.
The Eastbourne swimmer became the European record holder for the event with an overall time of 8:08.28, that knocked almost a minute off the previous best.
He excelled in the butterfly leg, setting a new British record for both his 50m and 100m split during the race.
Cumming swam his 100m Butterfly in 1:55.07 with the 50m split coming in at 51.57 that were both new British best efforts.
Another European record was set in the Open/Male 50m Butterfly.
It came from Woking’s Michael Hodgson who added to his growing list of records with his first of this year’s competition.
He set a time of 26.63, just 0.02 faster than the previous best time in a strong swim from the 56-year-old.
Later on in the session Hodgson added another thanks to his split time in Woking’s Open/Make 160+ Years 4x100m Freestyle team. Hodgson’s leg was a 55.31, slightly quicker than the previous best of a 55.92.
It wasn’t enough for Woking to win the event though with them finishing runners the Kenilworth Masters quartet.
The Open/Male 50m Butterfly saw a further three British records across the event with the first of those going to Teddington’s Steven Folsom.
Folsom’s effort took the British best to under 33 seconds for the first time as he set a 32.81.
Ben Harkin kept the claxon going after his record effort of a 25.71 for the 45-49 Years.
The Warrington swimmer was just over a second faster than his nearest challenger on the day as he powered to victory in the ‘splash and dash’ race.
Exe Masters’ Warren Barrett also set a new British best in the 35-39 Years event.
Barrett knocked 0.10 off the previous time as he was the only swimmer on the day to set a time faster than the 25-second mark. Barrett finished in 24.60.
Guy fly’s to European record glory
Rebecca Guy became the European and British record holder in the 50m butterfly.
Guy who swims out of Bristol Henleaze recorded the fastest female time of the event, swimming an incredible 26:77.
This puts her almost a second and a half ahead of the British record (28:01) and just 30 milliseconds faster than the previous European best.
In the 35/39 age category another British record was broken, as Victoria Reading’s 50m butterfly time saw her almost break the 28 second milestone.
The 38-year-old Northampton swimmer recorded a 28:14 which breaks her own British time of 28:57 which she swam at the same event last year.
Earlier on in the session, Michelle Ware smashed the first female British record of the afternoon.
The Woking was the first of many to better her own time to set a new record in session two.
Ware swam an incredible, 29:53 in the 50-54 Years category, with second place finishing more than two seconds behind her.
The previous British record, belonging to Ware, was 29:77, proved not to be good enough as she showed her improvement coming into the competition.
Jones joins European elite
Chris Jones became a European record holder in the Open/Male 100m Breaststroke.
The Portsmouth Northsea athlete narrowly beat the previous record after an impressive swim where he finished in 1:02.05.
That knocked just o.37 from the old best where he also set a British record for his 50m split time.
He finished his opening 50m in a time of 28.95 which was the first time a Brit in his age group had recorded a time under 29 seconds.
There were also two national records set in the Open/Male 100m Breaststroke. They were recorded by Cardiff Masters’ Benjamin Jones and Potters Bar swimmer John Cunningham.
Benjamin Jones’ 1:06.67 in the 30-34 Years was a new Welsh record whilst Cunningham’s 1:18.39 was a Irish best time for the 50-54 Years.
The Open/Male action for the afternoon rounded out with one European and two British records in the 4x100m Freestyle relay.
The European record came in the 240+ Years age group with Warrender Baths swimming club taking glory.
Their team of Jason Kenney, Ian McKay, Keith Johnston and Mark Jones set a time of 4:10.69.
It was a consistent effort from the entire team who swam expertly to become the best in the continent.
Neil Mackinnon, Ashley McEwen, Neville Barton and Alec Johnson teamed up to secure a 280+ Years British record.
Trafford Metro’s group completed the race in a time of 4:46.91 which was almost 10 seconds quicker than the previous record time.
And Derby Excel finished the session off in style with a British record in the final race.
The team of Liam Dawson, Tom Trueman, Alexander Harrand and Ethan Lawton set a time of 3:21.83 in the 72+ Years competition. That time was almost 13 seconds ahead of their closest rivals showing the strength of Derby’s newly formed quartet.
